Research

The Lab’s work is supported by the LegalTech research developed by the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law at Swansea University, as well as by other colleges within the University and several partner organisations in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Building upon this research and working with stakeholders across academia, private and public sectors, the Lab supports rigorous and transformative LegalTech research and innovation intonew technologies, studying their application to, and impact on, the legal sector.   We also enhance traditional research through the use of new technologies (e.g. big data, machine learning, standardisation and natural language processing), to support academics and practitioners in developing new data-driven insights into legal knowledge (case law, legislation, legal advice, etc.).

  • Our work is multi-themed, covering topic areas such as:

  • Regulation of new technologies

  • LegalTech-driven changes in the legal profession

  • New legal concepts and principles for new technologies

  • Legal analytics and data science

  • Digital rights

  • Algorithmic justice

  • Standardisation in representation of legal knowledge

  • Automatisation of intellectual property licensing and management

  • Accessibility of LegalTech research

  • Blockchain and smart contracts
