Supporting the Youth Justice Board

Dr Gemma Morgan and two interns from Swansea University are supporting the Youth Justice Board (YJB) Cymru to scope out current interventions available to young people in the Welsh language.

 Two recent HMIP inspection reports of the Welsh Youth Offending Services recommended that local authorities improve their capacity for delivering interactions and interventions to children in the Welsh language.

 Dr Gemma Morgan and her team have distributed a survey to all YJ Services and Secure Estates in Wales, which are 18 in total. They are looking to ascertain what Welsh language provisions are available, this would include looking at:

  • the interventions that are delivered within the YJ Service itself; what materials and resources are currently being used in the Welsh language;

  • how information is given to them;

  • general information about their roles, amongst others; and

  • more formal information like legal representation and legal advice, interactions with the police and any court reports.

They will also use existing data to identify gaps in Welsh language provisions and locate providers who can be commissioned to develop resources/interventions.

 A report and presentation will be prepared for the YJB detailing the findings from the survey and recommendations for Welsh language provisions.
