Our Mission

Technology is transforming legal practice and shaping the future of law. Established principles, conventions and practice are challenged by this evolution. We are all required to work together towards establishing the foundations of a new way.

Together we can lead the revolution in the industry, driving adoption of new technologies and ensuring that the next generation of the industry is well prepared.

By leveraging innovative technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, smart contracts and big data, we can move mountains and transform access to justice, provide data-driven support for legal decision-making and allow new, insightful, efficient ways to deliver tailored legal advice while ensuring new technologies that push the boundaries, legally and morally, are regulated correctly.

We operate across three dimensions, supporting innovation, research, and education in LegalTech, with the aim of contributing to the development of an inclusive, open and collaborative community in Wales and beyond.

Innovation

The legal sector  today is  confronted with major challenges in navigating  the  opportunities of  LegalTech.  We work in close partnership with law firms, start-ups, public and third sector organisations to better understand their unique perspectives and challenges, and to develop prototypes and  solutions  to support the sector in embracing LegalTech.

Research

The Lab’s work is supported by the LegalTech research developed by the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law at Swansea University, as well as by other colleges within the University and several partner organisations in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Education

Education is at the core of the Lab’s mission. We aim to support existing and future generations of lawyers in playing an active role in shaping the impact of LegalTech on the profession.

About the Lab

The Legal Innovation Lab Wales is a £5.6M initiative within the University’s Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law. The operation has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and Swansea University.

The Lab builds upon Swansea University’s position as an internationally leading institution working in the emerging LegalTech field, and research in counterterrorism, defence and security. The vibrant and transformative environment is equipped with modern facilities, including spaces for collaboration open to legal practitioners, other professionals and organisations, an Artificial Intelligence in Law laboratory, a Cyber Threats research suite, and a LegalTech Research and Development centre, bringing academic knowledge and research capacity to legal practice and delivery.

Working in partnership with organisations across the legal sector, our vision is to support the growth and sustainability of a vibrant LegalTech economy, improve access to justice, transform the delivery of legal services in Wales and beyond, and help grow an open, inclusive and collaborative LegalTech community.

How We’re Funded

The Legal Innovation Lab Wales, supported by funding from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh European Funding Office, is a collaborative space that aims to bridge the gaps between the legal community, the academic world and wider society. Empowering everyone, from individual lawyers to small law firms and third sector organisations, to play a key role in shaping the vision for LegalTech. It provides a space for collaboration, communication and change. The Lab nurtures cutting-edge applied research, supports the development of innovative LegalTech solutions and develops imaginative educational resources to support current and future generations of lawyers. The Lab also aims to be a space for discussion and engagement around policy-making for LegalTech.
